John Alverson born c1759 Fairfax Co. Va., died 25 Feb 1829 Laurens Dist., S. C. He md. Frances who was born in 1769 and died 7 Jan 1853 in Laurens Dist., S. C. They had: ELIJAH, Zachariah, William, John Jr., Frances (fem), Polly, Kissie. John was a revolutionary war soldier in the continental line out of Virginia. He was at Valley Forge as a wounded soldier. After he was discharged at Valley Forge he returned home to Virginia and a while later enlisted a second time as a wagoner. After the war he moved for a while to Caswell County N. C. He drew bounty land for his services and then moved to Laurens Dist., S. C. I have no proof of John's parentage.
War Department, Virginia Agency, 1814, shows John Alverson, private, annual allowance $40, pension commenced Mar 4, 1794, transferred to N. Carolina [Caswell Co].
The 1835 census of pensioners shows John Alverson, private, annual allowance $40, sums received $480, Virginia cont'l line, pension commenced Sept 4, 1802, age 70, transferred from North Carolina from September 4, 1814. Three more entries, increased pension to $64. Last entry says Died February 25, 1829.

Elijah Alverson born 2 July 1785 in Laurens Dist., S. C., and died in 1872 in St. Clair Co. Ala. He md. 20 March 1810 in S. C. to Clarissa Griffin born 17 March 1789 Newberry Co. S. C., died between 1850 and 1860 census of St. Clair Co., Ala. Elijah was a soldier in the war of 1812 from S. C. He drew bounty land in Alabama. He also drew a pension.

Archibald A. Alverson was born 18 Jan 1812 Laurens Dist., S. C., and died the 20th day of Feb 1900 in Madison Co. Ala. He is buried on top of Gurley mountain beside his third wife in a grave marked only by a big sandstone. A cousin that lives at Gurley took me to the spot where he is buried. Archibalds md. first 1 Aug 1834 Talladega Co. Ala. to Elizabeth Cann/Conn. It is hard to tell on the marriage record if the second letter of the name was an "a" or an "o". I believe it was an o because there were no Cann's there at the time but there was one Sanders Conn living in Talladega Co at that time. Elizabeth was born in 1817 in Ga., and died after the 1860 census and before June of 1861 in St. Clair Co. Ala. Archibald was a civil war soldier.

Jackson Alverson, born 20 June 1845 St. Clair Co., Ala., and died 21 Apr 1899 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Ala. He md. 31 Dec 1871 St. Clair Co. Ala. to Sarah E. Nichols born 11 May 1851 in Ala., and died 26 June 1898 at Coal City, Ala. Jack fought in the civil war along with a brother, and their father.

James Marvin Alverson born 13 Dec 1883 at Coal City, Ala. and died at West Frankfort, IL. He md. the 9th day of April 1905 at Coal City, Ala. to Hester Caroline Smith who was born 10 Jan 1891 at Coal City, Ala., and died 29 June 1977 at Herrin, Williamson Co., IL. James and Hester came to West Frankfort about 1927 to find work in the coal mines. James, who we all called "Pop" worked in the old #18 Peabody mine. He walked to work every day as he never learned to drive. James and Hester are both buried in the Tower Heights cemetery at West Frankfort.

Martha Lillian Alverson, was born the 19th day of September 1925 in Coal City, St. Clair Co. Alabama. She died the 26 of November 1993 in West Frankfort, Franklin Co., IL. She married Loren Elsworth Doxsie. Three daughters, one deceased.
